Slip to a Landing

Whiteboard

Quickly lose altitude without gaining airspeed.

Slips allow for greater descent rate without gaining airspeed, which is useful during approach.

  1. Energy
  2. Slip technique
  3. Drag
  4. Wind
  5. Airspeed inaccuracy
  6. Exiting the slip
  1. Bank into the wind
  2. Rudder opposite of bank
  3. Adjust rudder/bank to keep on centerline
  4. Recover with coordinated release of aileron/rudder
  5. Expect airspeed increase
  • Go-arounds/salvaging unstable approaches
  • Stalls
  • Not enough bank or rudder
  • Recovering from slip too early/too late
  • Airspeed loss in a slip
  • Not slipping into the wind
  • VREF +10/-5 knots
  • Touchdown +400/-0 feet
