Descents and Descending Turns

Whiteboard

Perform a coordinated, constant-airspeed descent, either straight or in a turn.

Every flight needs a descent.

  1. Constant rate or airspeed
  2. Descent attitude
  3. Excess thrust
  4. Downwash, nose-down
  5. Sequence
  6. Turns, coordination
  7. P-factor
  1. Set descent power
  2. Set descent attitude
  3. Set trim to remove pressure
  4. Adjust airspeed with pitch
  5. Start level-off 50' above target, for 500fpm descent
  6. Add cruise power and set S&L attitude
  • Fixation
  • Distraction
  • Collisions
  • Poor coordination
  • Inadequate back-pressure in turns
  • Fixation on instruments
  • "Chase" airspeed or VSI
  • Airspeed buildup
  • Establish, maintain, and level off from straight descents and descending turns.
