Level Turns

Whiteboard

Turning airplane with 20-45° of bank while holding altitude and remaining coordinated.

One of the fundamental flight maneuvers.

  1. Bank: VCL vs HCL ("turn stealing lift")
  2. Aileron = Bank
  3. Cowling
  4. Elevator = Pitch
  5. Adverse yaw
  6. Rudder with roll rate
  7. Left-turning tendencies
  8. L/R sight picture
  1. Establish bank with coordinate aileron/rudder
  2. Establish sight picture with cowling, pitch as needed
  3. Roll-out with coordinate aileron and rudder, relax pitch
  • Collision
  • Fixation
  • Distractions
  • Not clearing the area
  • Tilting the head to keep it level
  • Leaning while turning
  • Overuse of instruments
  • Uncoordination
  • Holding too much rudder in turn
  • Establish, maintain, and roll out of a level turn
