VFR Weather Minimums

Visual Flight Rules (VFR) weather minimums are the minimum weather conditions required for VFR flight in different classes of airspace. These minimums are defined in 14 CFR 91.155 and are intended to facility "see and avoid" operations when IFR traffic mixes with VFR traffic.

In Class G airspace, you may operate under VFR with in 1/2 mile of an airport runway:

  • at night, as long as the visibility is at least 3 statute miles and you remain clear of clouds

No person may operate an aircraft beneath the ceiling under VFR within the lateral boundaries of controlled airspace designated to the surface for an airport when the ceiling is less than 1,000 feet.
